QR code campaigns deliver a lot of benefits to small businesses. But like any other marketing campaign, it could backfire and fail on you. Here are four ways to make sure you fail:
1. Do not plan your campaign.
The scenario: You have a great poster and you have decided to put a QR code on it. You pay for advertising space and put up your materials there. People see the code and scan it, only to get disappointed when they realize that the area has no Internet signal.
Every marketing campaign needs to be well planned. From logistics (where you place the codes) to the content offered (what do you give your customers when they scan the code) should be properly laid out and thought over.
What's more, you should be tracking your QR codes to enable you to know what's working and what's not, and ultimately allow you to fine-tune your campaigns.
2. Do not test the QR code you are going to use.
It might sound surprising, but there are a lot of QR codes that we have seen and we just cannot scan it! It either fails or, worse, it takes us to a different site than what we expected. One local retailer had put up a QR code on his store windows, which code was supposed to take scanners to a Groupon discount. To his horror, the QR code resolved to a blank page.
QR codes need to be tested before they are deployed. Check to see if the code is easily readable by using different scanning apps on an iPhone, an Android device, a Blackberry and other platforms.
3. Make your customers work more.
We've seen QR codes that resolve to a text message, and were dumbfounded that the text was a URL. Were we supposed to copy that to our browser?
The beauty of QR codes is that it is so flexible that you could put anything behind it and it automatically serves up that content. If you want people to visit your site, then put your URL behind the QR code instead of text. This will lessen the amount of work that your users would have to do.
4. Direct scanners to a non-mobile site.
Some QR code campaigns fail because people are directed to the company's own site. While tablets and other smartphones can now read an ordinary website coded for the desktop or laptop computers, there are still a lot of devices with smaller screens.
Build a different mobile-friendly site. Don't give your scanners a headache when it comes to websites. Don't make them scroll up and down, left and right and give them videos that are cut off because of their smaller screens.
