Google has just secured a patent for driverless car technology. The search giant, which applied for the patent in May this year, will be using artificial intelligence to control a car in various situations.
Specifically, this technology will utilize GPS in order to locate pre-determined “landing strips” or markers on the road. The driver will need to stop the car at a landing strip so it can go into an autonomous mode. The vehicle’s cameras or sensors will detect the landing strips, equipped with quick response codes. By reading the QR code, the car can then proceed to a specific location without somebody actually driving it.
The car’s artificial intelligence will receive the autonomous instructions and use GPS, cameras and sensors to run itself through obstacles along its pre-defined route and into an available parking space at the identified destination. Once can also program the vehicle to wait for a particular amount of time at a particular point.
The company has created a prototype that’s based on a Toyota Prius, using a Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) device mounted on the car’s roof. This device is what monitors the car’s surroundings, as accurately as less than an inch. Google has reportedly already taken this autonomous car to an open-road, one-thousand mile test, requiring it to traverse a complicated terrain and route without human intervention.
Through the new patent, the car’s manufacturers can explore the driving and control methods in the regulated areas without having human control. The patent will also allow Google to keep other companies from utilizing the same autonomous technology that would enable their cars to switch to a driverless mode.

It would be nice to have this kind of QR-code controlled vehicle, but don’t expect it to be out in the market any time soon. It is still not unlikely for U.S. roads to be equipped with the necessary sensors that support these autonomous vehicles in the near future as the technology is still too expensive.
